Saturday 22nd October
“it” Bay of Islands Food & Wine Festival. This year there has been a lot of media coverage outside of the region for the festival which is great promotion for Paihia. We have top NZ band The Feelers appearing as the headline act, and during the day we also have Kosher playing and Tauranga Samba. Paihia hasn’t had anything like Tauranga Samba visit before and we can assure you, that you will be impressed and wanting to hear more! There will be things for the kids to do including a bouncy castle, and top quality food being served, along with Northland wines and Monteith’s beer and cider. To add to the mix there will be scallop and oyster shucking, kina sucking and pie eating competitions.
Tickets are limited so it is a good idea to purchase your ticket prior to the event. You can book online click here, or visit to the Paihia i-Site or Paihia Information and Booking Office.

If you are a restaurant and want to enter the Ti Point Seafood Chowder Competition that was judged at the festival last year then email info@paihianz.co.nz. There is no charge to enter. The trophy was won in 2010 by the Opua Marina Cafe.

Sunday 23rd October
The Big Brekkie - Paihia Village Green. Come out on Sunday morning and have your breakfast on the Village Green. Fundraising groups will be cooking and serving breakfast. A great way to start the day of the Rugby World Cup final. Let’s hope we are all dressing in our black jerseys that day!

So as you can see along with everything else Rugby World Cup has been a busy time for Business Paihia. A big thank you to our organising committee – Sarah Greener, Scott & Lee-Ann Sutherland, Suzi Jones, Heinz Marti, Wendy Hopkinson, Todd Evers, Darryl Honey, Steph Godsiff and Anika West. And a final thank you to Simon Boyle from the Copthorne who was very active in the festivities the last 2 years before moving to Australia this month.

There is plenty happening over RWC with many bars, restaurants and businesses putting on special evenings, food, activities and music. This Saturday there is the Russell Oyster Festival and Kawakawa Steam Sevenz, on the 25th September there is the Tongan Church Service and Umu. In October there is Little Vineyards, the Sweet As Music Festival and the Hell Hole of the Pacific.
Details of all these events can be found on at www.paihianz.co.nz/events/

Cruise Ships Season Starts

Things are changing this year with the increase in the number of cruise ships to the Bay of Islands. We have listened to the inbound tour operators and to what adds value to a ships visit. Things that are well received with the passengers is the Ambassadors on the buses and around town, having a craft market and entertainment. We intend to ensure that these things remain in place and we are also scheduling entertainment for when the cruise ships are here to ensure there is a festival atmosphere throughout town. We really want retailers to put out the welcome signs especially for the cruise ships when they are in town as it is all these little things that count.

Council Matters

The parking issue is still being addressed with FNDC, and we are working on a solution to suit Paihia.

Around town

Williams Road is looking smarter with the colourful triangle flags on the newly painted posts. You may have noticed already that work has started on the area that is being “placemaked” following the Art of Placemaking Workshop. There has been a crew working on the site (by the crossing and the i-Site), and behind the scenes – preparing mosaics, painting benches and finishing off with a working bee this Saturday and Sunday.

Focus Paihia Pre-Loved Boutique
Focus Paihia is starting up a second hand shop in Paihia – it will be run by volunteers and the money raised will go back into the Community via Focus Paihia projects around town. They are looking for donations, in good condition, such as clothing, bric-a-brac, ornaments, pictures or small items of furniture. No TVs or large pieces of furniture. The shop is on Selywn Rd in Paihia and scheduled to open Tuesday 27th September from 10am – 4pm. Anticipated opening hours are Thurs and Fri 10am – 4pm and Sat 10am – 1pm. If you would like to donate items or any of your time to look after the shop then contact Kath Williams on 402 8044.

The Paihia Christmas Parade
The Parade is Friday 9th December and the theme is “Rivers of the World” – this should conjure up many images – could be anacondas in the Amazon, whitewater rafting or trout on the Tongariro, wakas up Waitangi – the list is endless with all the amazing rivers around the world. There are many creatures living in or on rivers, activities in rivers, festivals and rituals surrounding rivers and of course they are major transport systems and sources of food and livelihood.

Once again it will be a hard year for the parade judges! There were some amazing floats last year and we want it to be outstanding again this year, so email info@paihianz.co.nz if you would like to enter. Great prizes to be won, for both the best community and business float. No charge to enter!

If you are a little stuck on what to do, materials to use or a good wholesale supplier to contact - then Jan Ward who has been behind some fantastic floats can give you advice – you can email her on remmy@slingshot.co.nz, include your phone number in your email.
